Visakhapatnam is the rare Indian metro built around its coast rather than turned away from it. Everything worth doing lies along the 30 km of shoreline from Yarada in the south to Bheemili in the north, and most of it is a short auto ride from the centre.
Morning
- Sunrise walk on RK Beach — the whole city is there by 6 am
- INS Kursura Submarine Museum and the TU-142 aircraft museum next door (open from 10 am)
- Kailasagiri ropeway for the view of the bay
Afternoon
- Simhachalam temple, 16 km inland — the stone chariot and Kalinga sculpture
- Visakha Museum and the war memorial on Beach Road
- Lunch: seafood thali or crab curry in a Dwaraka Nagar or MVP Colony restaurant
Evening
- Rushikonda for a swim (the only beach where it is safe)
- Drive the Beach Road to Bheemili for sunset and the Dutch cemetery
- Back to RK Beach for muri mixture and mirchi bajji from the carts
Day two: pick one
Araku Valley by train (a full day, better with an overnight); Yarada beach and Dolphin's Nose for a quiet morning; or the Buddhist sites — Thotlakonda and Bavikonda on the Bheemili road, Bojjannakonda near Anakapalli — for a heritage loop.
Where to eat
Vizag's seafood is the point: crab, prawns and pomfret in Andhra masala. Dwaraka Nagar and Siripuram have the established restaurants; the beach carts do the snacks. For Andhra meals, the old restaurants around Jagadamba Junction; for coffee, the Araku Coffee outlets.
