Tirumala receives tens of thousands of pilgrims a day, and the experience depends almost entirely on planning. Aandhra.com is not affiliated with the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD); every booking must be done on the official TTD portal. This guide explains the system so you can use it well.

Darshan types

  • Sarva Darshan: free, walk-in, through the queue complex. Waiting time varies from two hours on a quiet weekday to most of a day at festivals.
  • Special Entry Darshan (₹300): timed slots released online in advance; the most practical option for most visitors.
  • Divya Darshan: for pilgrims who walk up the Alipiri or Srivari Mettu footpaths — tokens issued at the path.
  • Senior citizens and differently-abled: separate slots on specific days, bookable online.
  • Sevas (Suprabhatam, Archana, Kalyanotsavam): limited tickets, allotted by lottery on the TTD site months ahead.

Booking

Create an account on the TTD portal, watch the quota release dates (usually released in advance for the following months), and book darshan, accommodation on the hill and the return bus in one sitting. Print or save the ticket with the ID you registered — the same ID must be carried.

Getting up the hill

APSRTC and TTD buses leave from Tirupati bus station and the railway station every few minutes; the ghat road takes about 45 minutes. Private vehicles need a pass at Alipiri. Walking: the Alipiri path is about 3,500 steps and 9 km (3–4 hours); Srivari Mettu, reached from Srinivasa Mangapuram, is steeper but shorter (about 2,400 steps, under two hours).

Staying

TTD guest houses and choultries on the hill are cheap and clean but must be booked online well ahead; otherwise stay in Tirupati town (hundreds of hotels around the railway station and Tilak Road) and go up for your slot. Annaprasadam — free meals — is served all day on the hill.

Around Tirupati

Add Srikalahasti (36 km) for the Vayu-linga and Rahu–Ketu pooja, Chandragiri fort (12 km) for the Vijayanagara palace museum, Kapila Theertham for the waterfall temple, and Talakona (50 km) for the state's tallest waterfall. Two full days cover Tirumala plus all four.

FAQs

How early should I book Special Entry Darshan?

As soon as the quota opens for your month — popular dates go within hours. Check the TTD portal's release schedule.

Is there a dress code?

Yes — traditional dress (dhoti/kurta for men, saree/salwar for women) is required for Special Entry Darshan and sevas.
